Pottery Techniques

Pottery is one of the oldest and most enduring forms of art, dating back thousands of years. It involves shaping clay into functional or decorative objects, which are then fired in a kiln to harden. In this class, you'll learn the basics of pottery, explore different techniques, and create your own unique pieces.

1. Hand Building

and building is a versatile and accessible pottery technique that involves shaping clay by hand without the use of a potter's wheel.

Pinch Pot:

Create small vessels by pinching the clay with your fingers.

Build larger forms by stacking and smoothing coils of clay

Wheel Throwing

Wheel throwing is the art of using a potter's wheel to shape clay. This technique requires practice and skill, but it allows for the creation of symmetrical and finely crafted pieces.

Slab Building:

Use flat pieces of clay to construct shapes and structures.

Wheel Throwing
  • Centering: Positioning the clay in the center of the wheel.

  • Opening: Creating an opening in the centered clay.

  • Pulling: Drawing the walls of the clay upward to form the desired shape.

  • Trimming: Refining the shape and removing excess clay.

  • Sgraffito: Carving designs into the clay surface.

  • Slip Trailing: Applying slip (liquid clay) to create raised patterns.

  • Underglazing: Painting designs with colored slip before glazing.

  • Glazing: Applying a glass-like coating that adds color and texture, and protects the piece.
